Hi! Welcome to The Playful Needle. We are dedicated to offering the finest hand-painted needlepoint canvases, counted cross-stitch charts and fabrics, and crewel-work kits available. When the store was established in 1996, it was our mission to bring to Portland the threads and yarns that elevate needlework to artistry and simply make stitching so relaxing, rewarding, and fun. We are proud to say that we have succeeded beyond our own expectations. The store now carries nearly 70 different types of needleart threads, most in complete color lines and we are always on the lookout for new unique threads and yarns. As a full service needlework store we also offer custom needleart finishing, needleart framing, painted canvas design and counted thread design.

The Playful Needle is located in the west end of downtown Portland, at 1103 SW Alder between SW 11th and 12th Avenues. The west end is the place for textile and fiber arts with Knit-Purl (knitting), The Button Emporium (buttons, ribbons, heirloom embroidery and doll making), Let it Bead (beading), Fabric in the City (quilting), and Josephine's Dry Goods (fashion sewing) within four blocks of each other. While we currently do not offer on-line shopping, we are always happy to mail order, so email us or call, and when next in Portland, come pay us a visit! We are easily accessible by public transportation from all parts of Portland and its surrounds.
